A Practical Understanding

Sometimes the obvious needs to be stated

The tangible portion of the economy has, is, and will always be  intrinsically tied to the environment. Everything physical that has been commercially offered, whether harvested, mined, constructed, manufactured, resold and eventually disposed of or recycled, one way or the other is involved with the earth’s resources.

The relationship between human society and the natural environment is often obscured depending on various circumstances

In the ancient world agriculture as well as hunting was the standard means to sustenance.

As farming became commonplace, the farmers needed to be aware of the importance to collaborate with nature. Soil, location, climate and timing were very important factors in having successful produce.

The hunter needed to cooperate with environmental factors for his success as well.  If animals are removed from their natural environment faster than their ability to reproduce they will die off. It became necessary to implement the profession of breeding, herding and ranching animals which allowed people more control over the health and quality of this commodity.

At the onset of the industrial revolution few people took notice of the limitations of the Earth. It was commonly assumed that resources such as minerals and petroleum were virtually infinite.

As the population of the world approaches 8 billion it is becoming more apparent that non renewable resources such as minerals and petroleum will eventually become exhausted.

Level-headed approach to complex issues

The reality is that humans need to perceive and relate to this planet as one would to their goose that lays the golden egg .

The earth is the wellspring that drives the economy. A perfect analogy would be to see ourselves as a compassionate gardener.

A garden is an organic living entity that can provide foods, materials and aesthetic beauty. It requires tending and nurturing. The garden is a microcosm of the earth.

It’s the economy stupid

The larger national and multinational corporations have the most impact concerning environmental issues. Their obligation is to the profitability and financial health of the organization. Although things have improved in recent years large corporations still need to consider the raw sources of their manufactured products. Just as above, if the hunter or rancher kills off the breeding stock of his habitat, he will no longer have access to the very commodity that has sustained him.

The incentive based capitalistic system has been incredibly successful in terms of advancing innovation and improving the human condition. However it is not perfect, especially if short term profit is the only factor taken into consideration. When the big picture and long term profitability is prioritized environmental concerns and profits are not at all adversaries.

The most “marketed” generation in history

Our packaged diet, our disposable, buy and throw away culture is actually a on the course of a suicide mission.

Corporations are now recognizing that the earth is a closed and finite system. It is not inexhaustible nor indestructible. Businesses are finding that they can no longer consider only the short term benefits regarding the tangible financial system.

We’ve all been subjected to a lifetime of promotion / publicity / hype / advertising / propaganda campaigns from every direction. The well financed wealthy corporate sources have easily recruited the best talent, the top thinkers in the world. They have done such a good job on our thought process, that we don’t even realize that we’ve been conditioned not to even question the validity of these campaigns.

With the foresight knowing that economic growth is dependent on the health and wellness we maintain on our planet, the garden and business will thrive.

In going forward, business and government realize that both short and long term economic growth depends on practicing the sound principles of a caring gardener.
